Project title: Integrated IoT and Drone System for Monitoring and Alerting in Smart Orchards
Project description:
SIMADO is an innovative research project focused on advancing precision agriculture in apple orchards through the integration of IoT sensors, drone technologies, high-speed connectivity, and artificial intelligence. The project aims to provide farmers with real-time insights into crop health, environmental conditions, and operational challenges, enabling faster and more informed decision-making.
By combining data collected from field sensors, aerial imagery, and advanced AI analytics, SIMADO supports the early detection of diseases, pests, water stress, and nutrient deficiencies while generating tailored recommendations for irrigation, fertilization, and crop protection. A key innovation of the project is the use of AI-powered decision support and a dedicated knowledge base for apple cultivation, offering practical and context-aware guidance to growers.
The project is carried out by BEIA, the project coordinator, together with JOANNEUM RESEARCH, bringing together expertise in IoT platforms, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, and precision farming. SIMADO aims to improve productivity, optimize resource consumption, and contribute to a more sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural sector. Following validation in apple orchards, the developed technologies have the potential to be adapted for other high-value crops and agricultural applications
